What VPIP and PFR mean, and what the gap between them says
VPIP is how often a player puts money in before the flop by choice. PFR is how often they raise. The distance between the two numbers is the part that tells you how they play.
The two definitions
VPIP stands for voluntarily put money in pot. It is the share of hands dealt to a player in which they chose to put chips in before the flop, by any route: limping, calling a raise, raising, or re-raising.
PFR stands for preflop raise. It is the share of hands dealt in which they raised or re-raised before the flop.
Both are percentages of hands dealt, so a player with a VPIP of 24 is entering roughly 24 pots in every 100 hands they are dealt.
What counts and what does not
The word doing the work in VPIP is voluntarily.
Counts towards VPIP:
- limping in
- calling someone else’s raise
- raising
- re-raising
- calling a raise from the big blind
Does not count towards VPIP:
- posting the small blind or big blind and then folding, because the blinds are forced
- checking your option in the big blind when nobody raised, because checking puts nothing extra in
Only raises and re-raises count towards PFR. A call is not a raise, so a player who calls a lot adds to their VPIP and leaves their PFR where it was.
The denominator
Both numbers use hands dealt to that player, not hands played, not pots contested. That matters when you compare two players: the denominator is the same for both, so the numbers are directly comparable even though one of them is folding far more often.
A quick example. Over 200 hands a player voluntarily put money in on 62 of them and was the first or the next to raise on 31.

So of the hands they play, roughly half go in with a raise and half go in with a call.
Why PFR is almost never higher than VPIP
Raising is one of the ways to put money in voluntarily. Every hand counted in PFR is therefore also counted in VPIP, which makes PFR the smaller of the two by construction.
They come out equal only for a player who never enters a pot any other way: raise or fold, nothing in between. If you ever see PFR above VPIP in a real sample, something is wrong with how the hands were counted, not with the player.
Reading the gap
Subtract PFR from VPIP and you have how often the player enters a pot without raising: limps and cold calls.

The two numbers together say more than either alone. A VPIP of 42 on its own tells you the player is loose. Put the PFR beside it and you learn whether they are loose and pushing the action or loose and along for the ride, and those two call for completely different responses.
How many hands before the number means anything
Both numbers are proportions, so their reliability follows the usual arithmetic for a proportion. The standard error is the square root of p × (1 - p) / n, where p is the rate and n is the number of hands.
Take a player showing a VPIP of 25%.

After 100 hands, a player who looks like a 25% VPIP could genuinely be a 16% VPIP or a 34% VPIP. Those are different players. After 1000 hands the range has narrowed to something you can act on.
VPIP settles fastest because it fires on a large share of hands. PFR needs more hands than VPIP. Anything that only happens after the flop needs far more again, because the denominator is no longer hands dealt but the much smaller number of hands that got that far.
Format, table size and position all change the reading
Table size. At a six-handed table there are fewer players left to act behind you, so entering a pot is cheaper in risk than it is at a full ring table. Higher numbers are normal at six-handed, and comparing a six-handed VPIP against a full ring VPIP without saying so compares two different things.
Position. A single overall VPIP averages every seat together. The same player might enter 15% of hands from the first seat and 45% from the button, and the average tells you neither. Position-split numbers say much more, when you have enough hands to split them.
The table. Numbers describe a player in the games they have been playing. Someone disciplined at an aggressive table will show lower numbers than the same person at a passive one, and neither figure is the truth about them in isolation.
There is no single correct pair
It is tempting to look for the right numbers and grade everyone against them. There are not any. What works depends on the format, the table size, the tendencies of the people in the game, and above all on the rest of the player’s game: a wide preflop range is a problem or an asset depending entirely on how well the hands are played after the flop.
Use the numbers the way they are meant to be used. They describe tendencies and they raise questions. They do not hand out marks.
What to take away
